Colgate Games - 6th-8th January - Tauranga
17 Eastern athletes competed at the North Island Colgate Games held this year in Tauranga.
Despite heavy rain and wind throughout most of the weekend, several personal bests were recorded and Mayah Coleman won Gold in the 11 Girls Discus (and broke the club Shot Put record although not medalling).
Divisional Pennant winners Grade 7 -9 (no times or overall placings are recorded for 7-9 track events):
7 Girls
Tanisha Griffiths 3rd Discus
3rd Shot Put
7 Boys
Fergus Kenna 3rd 100m
Jesse Coleman 3rd 200m
11 Girls

One athlete - James Uhlenberg - travelled to the South Island Colgate Games the following weekend in Nelson (in contrast to Tauranga, beautifully sunny).
James won two medals in his specialist middle distance events while also making the hurdles and 400m finals:
12 Boys James Uhlenberg Silver Medal 1500m 4.57.32
Bronze Medal 800m 2.25.99

John Walker Night of Miles - Saturday 17th December
The John Walker Night of Miles doubles as the Auckland Junior 1500m Championships.
Eastern has a very good recent history in this event and our 12 year olds didn't let us down this year with Georgia Clode 2nd in the girls and James Uhlenberg 3rd in the boys events respectively.

5 medals at Auckland Relay Championships
Auckland relay champs were on Saturday 3rd December at Massey Park, Papakura.
We only had five teams entered in this competition but managed 5 medals. Once again the 7’s and 8’s proved to be the most successful of the Eastern teams.
Results:
7 boys 4x200m Gold
8 Girls 4x100m Gold
4x 200m Gold
11 Girls 4x100m Bronze
4x200m Bronze
We also had teams in the 12 boys and 10 girls. These just missed out on medalling.
The 8 girls, 10 girls and 11 girls also competed as all girl field teams against the two boy/two girl teams.
The younger group of 8yr girls having to put up with a bit of stick from their boy competitors but they took it in their stride and performed well.

Another successful day for Eastern at the Counties Relays held on a sunny Sunday 27th November at the newly refurbished Massey Stadium at Papakura.

Auckland Champs - 19March Mt Smart Stadium
As is usually the case, Auckland Champs was a long day, finishing after 6pm. Unlike the disrupted Counties Manukau Champs a nice day enjoyed by all who participated.
Eastern brought home a total of 19 medals, maintaining our high standards of the last few years. As usual we played to our middle distance strengths with more than half of the
medals gained for distances between 800m and 3000m.
Three club records were broken - all achieved while scoring silver medals and all breaking records set in 2008:
Bailey Stewart's 14 boys 400m time of 54.23 broke Jaxon Bonnici's Auckland Champs record (Bailey subsequently rebroke this at North Island Secondary Schools champs).
Riandri de Bruyn set a new club record in the 13 girls 80m Hurdles. Her time of 14.95 breaking Cara Blanchard's 2008 15.01 set at Interprovincials.
Finally Sam Heslin set a new 12 boys 800m record of 2.20.60 breaking Henry Newell's 2.21.90 from Interprovincials.
De-Arna and Leanne Griffiths also established club standards in the 10 and 12 girls 1200m walks respectively.

Counties Manukau Champs
Originally scheduled for Saturday 5th, torrential rain unfortunately saw Counties manukau postpone to the following day. Sunday's weather was also dicey and with our
own club champs in the afternoon it was understandable that only three of our (original eleven) registered athletes attended.
With only the morning to compete, our athletes also weren't able to compete in all their favoured events, so they did very well in that all three medalled.
Matthew Eady won Silver in the 8 yr boys 60m.
James Uhlenberg won Gold in the 11 boys 1500m and Silver in the high jump.
Riandri de Bruyn won Gold in the 13 girls hurdles and Silver in the 1500m.

Auckland 2000/3000m Champs
More strong middle distance performances from Eastern athletes at the 2000/3000m champs held at Pakuranga on Saturday 26th February.
Georgia Clode won the 11 Girls 2000m setting a new club record of 7.26.93.
A nice double saw James Uhlenberg 2nd and James Matthews 3rd in the 11 Boys 2000m.
Daniel Chapman was 3rd in 12 Boys 3000m, with his time of 11.32.94 smashing the old club record.
Daisy Archibald was 3rd in the 13 Girls and the versatile Riandri de Bruyn was 4th in the same race.
(10 and 11 year olds run 2000m and 12-14 year olds run 3000m in these chamnpionships)

Top Ten
The Auckland Top Ten competition was held at a hot Mt Smart on the 19th Feb.
A great day was had by all and 26 Eastern athletes competed, meaning we had entries in all age/gender groups except 10/13 boys and 14 girls.
Two of our teams medalled in what is usually a very strong competition. 3rd places to the 9 Boys team of Matthew Wynne and Ollie Kelly and the 7 Girls team of
Tiana Salesa and Charlotte Gordon. Our 12 and 14 Boys teams were both apparently unlucky not to medal, both finishing close in 4th positions.
Overall Eastern finished in 8th place of all teams actross the Auckland region - a creditable performance and a couple of places higher than last year.
19th February 2011
Pentathlon - 5th February Mt Smart Stadium
9 year old Matthew Wynne was the only Eastern athlete to medal at the 2011 pentathlon.
His bronze was a good result given a large field of competitors.

Another long standing record broken
Three Eastern athletes travelled to the South Island Colgate Games at Logan Park, Dunedin on the weekend of 14th-16th January.
In yet another example of the club's long standing records being broken in the past couple of seasons, Harry Marks set a new 14 year boys Long Jump record with a jump of 6.23m. The previous record
of 5.99m was set in 1998.
Harry currently holds 11 club records, and would probably hold more but for time spent out injured in previous seasons .
12th January 2011
North Island Colgate Games - 7th, 8th, 9th January 2011 - Hastings
According to Team Manager Judith Uhlenberg the first day of competition saw temperatures approaching 35 degrees on the track as well as high
humidity, but by Sunday cold southerlies with rain made competition difficult and uncomfortable. A strong headwind added to the challenging conditions.
Our team of 14 ahtletes did well to compete in such extreme conditions, with most of our senior athletes (10-14 year olds) reaching finals in their events.
8yr boys – Matthew Eady - 1st 100m, 2nd 200m, 2nd 60m.
9yr boys – Matthew Wynne - 1st 200m, 1st 100m, 2nd 60m, 2nd long jump.
9 yr girls – Samantha Watson - 3rd 100m.
14 yr girls – Audrey Gregan - 2nd 1500m.

John Walker Night of Miles - Saturday 18th December
This event, which doubles as the Auckland Junior 1500m Championship was held in torrential rain but this didn't stop our athletes recording 3 medals and 2 new club records.
James Uhlenberg won the 11 Boys Silver medal
Georgia Clode won the 11 Girls Silver medal and in the process broke the previous 1500m club record (which has stood for 21 years) by over 8 seconds.
Sam Heslin, in the 12 Boys, took our third Silver and also broke Henry Newell's 2008 record by almost 7 seconds. Sam now holds the 11 and 12 Year old 1500m records.
Awesome efforts in pouring rain!

Auckland Relay Champ - Results
This event was held on Saturday 4 December at Mt Smart.
We entered 9 teams across all age groups and came away with 8 medals, with our 7 year olds following up their good performances at the Counties Manukau Relays.
The field relays are run as Mixed teams of 2 girls and 2 boys so the 7 year old results below are particularly notable in that they competed as a team of 4 girls in the Long Jump and 3 Girls/1Boy in the Shot Put and till medalled in these events.

Counties Relays Championships - 25 Medals!!!
Another successful day for Eastern at the Counties Relays held at Jellicoe Park, Manurewa last weekend.
After a couple of early showers, the weather provided a very good day for athletics.
Nearly all Eastern athletes who attended won medals and we also had a good turnout of parents - thank you to those who helped with Eastern's rostered duty at the lane changeover (special thanks to the "Blonde Hairdresser") .
With teams in most age groups we won 25 medals (7 gold, 5 silver, 13 bronze), all but matching our best ever relay medal haul of 26 in 2008, and exceeding it in the number of gold medals (4 won in 2008).
Another similarity to 2008 was that both results were built on very strong 7 and 8 year old teams, augering well for the standard at the club in the next few years.
