2 new records at Club Champs
Ephraim Salesa set a new 7 year boys 60m record at 9.66s, breaking Daniel Chapman's 2006 mark.
It's certainly been a season for some of our really old records to go. Samantha Watson (8 girls) has taken one with a long jump of 3.86m.
This broke a 1991 record by 2cm. If this is any guide, Samantha could be in her mid-late 20s before this one goes again!

15 Medals, 7 Club Records at Auckland Champs
A long day that started at 8am with the last events finishing at 6pm.
Like the Counties Manukau Champs it was very hot and dusty throughout the day, including some small dust storms, but there were also short rainy periods - i.e. typical Auckland weather.
2010 turned out to be another very good year for Eastern at the Auckland Champs with 18 medals (if we include the 1500m Champs which are now held separately to the main Championship day).
8 Girls Samantha Watson 3rd long jump
9 Girls Yasmin Shakes 3rd 100m, 3rd 200m
Mayah Coleman 2nd Discus (23.89 new record)
10 Boys Fraser McKinlay 1st 400m, 1st 800m
11 Boys Sam Heslin 1st 800m (2.23.91 new record)
12 girls Riandri de Bruyn 1st 100m Hurdles
13 Boys Harry Marks 1st Long Jump (6.05 new record), 1st 100m (11.98 new record)
Charlie Staite 3rd Shot Put
14 boys Jordan Vetter 1st 100m hurdles (15.13 new record), 2nd 400m, 3rd High Jump (1.70 new record)
Henry Newell 2nd 800m (2.08.08 new record)
Mayah (pictured) broke her own Colgate Games record from January - prior to that the previous record had lasted 9 years.
Sam also broke his own Colgate Games record. Previously the club 800m record had lasted 20 years!
Harry continues his trawl through the club records, resetting sprint and jump marks as he goes. His 2010 performances better those of Nick Thomas (100m) and Michael Bradley (long jump) both set in 2007.
Having established the 14 boys 100m hurdles standard at the Colgate games (ie the record was previously vacant) Jordan has now set a record by bettering this. He also continues his high jump form of the last few years in adding 4cm to the previous record (another long standing record - set in 1998).
Eastern has traditionally been relatively strong in middle distance so our records are fairly strong in this area. Henry's effort to better James Watt's 2008 (bronze medal) 800m run means he now holds the 12, 13 and 14 year records for 800m.

29 Medals at Counties Manukau Champs
Held on grass at Manurewa this year - due to the unavailability of Massey Park - 13 Eastern athletes (of a total of 19 competing) scored a haul of 29 medals.
The day was very, very hot but that didn't stop an excellent set of results including Jordan Vetter breaking the 14 year boys high jump with a new mark of 1.72 (previous was 1.66 set by Luke Ibbs in 2008).
7 Girls Madison Davis-Donnelly 1st Long Jump, 3rd 200m, 3rd 60m, 3rd 100m

Top Ten - 6th Feb 2010
The 2010 Top Ten saw Eastern 10th place - following the sequence of several years now where we have hovered around 9th and 10th but staying within the all important
Top Ten (of the 18-20 Auckland region clubs).
This was especially notable as we competed without teams in the 7 and 9 Boys or 13 Girls and one 12 Boy competed alone. With teams competing in these age groups, we might have finished as high as 6th
Three of our teams medalled in their individual age groups. Jordan Vetter & Mikyle Frank won the 14 Boys, while Charlie Staite & Harry Marks and Yasmin Shakes & Isabel McGillivray were second in the 13 Boys and 9 Girls respectively.

13 new records from Colgate Games
With the Colgate Games being help in Auckland over a beautiful weekend this year, Eastern athletes had every opportunity to capture medals and records and they didn't disappoint.
53 Athletes took part in the games (with 3 also travelling to the South Island Colgate Games held in Timura the follwing week), for a total of 8 medals and 13 new club records.
Especially notable were Fraser McKinley who (winning the Gold) took another 3 seconds off his 10 Boys 1500m record set just before Christmas, Nicole Fairbrother who broke the club
14 Girls Long Jump record at the North Island Colgates and broke it again the following weekend at the South Island Games and Harry Marks who took an enormous 0.91s (and Bronze medal) off the 13 Boys 200m
record set by Nick Thomas a couple of years ago and then followed that up by adding 23cm to the previous Long Jump record on his was to winning the Gold medal in that event.

Trans-Tasman representatives from Eastern
The following athletes represented Eastern with distinction in the Auckland Trans-Tasman team competing against New South Wales at Waitakere Stadium on Sunday 17th January.
Lisa Fairbrother
Louise Yates
Caitlin Dodd
Sophia Frankish
Fraser Hamilton
Fraser McKinlay
Sam Heslin
Daniel Chapman
James Uhlenberg
As is always the case, the club also had significant representation in the organisation and administration of the Trans-Tasman event.
Rodger and Denise were both members of the executive committee, Rodger and Kim Anderson were both selectors and Denise was also an administrator.
Fraser McKinley and Sam Heslin continued their strong seasons with Silver medals in the 10 and 11 Boys 1500m respectively. The standard in Trans-Tasman
competition is always extremely high, especially on the track, and this is a very good effort from Fraser and SAM.

First records of the season
Club records for both the 10 and 11 year old boys were broken at the Auckland Junior 1500m Championship run in conjunction with the John Walker Night of Miles on December 19th.
With an outstanding time for 10 year olds, both Fraser McKinlay and James Uhlenberg took several seconds off Brandon James' 2005 Auckland Champs run, which was an impressive effort itself for those who
remember it.
Fraser ran 5.08.05 and James 5.10.08 for an Eastern gold/silver double.
Sam Heslin then ran 4.48.75 to smash the 11 year old 1500m record set by Thomas Hood in 2001 by almost 13 seconds.
Clearly the future of boys middle distance running at Eastern is looking especially bright with these boys running 5 minutes and under at this stage of the season.

Top 10 Results
Mt Smart hosted the regional Top 10 Champs on Sunday 15th February.
The Top 10 is open to every junior club in the Auckland and Counties regions and involves teams of 2 boys and 2 girls per age group competing for points
In addition to the medals available to athletes, the accumulated points for all athletes are counted to give an overall club placing - with the aim obviously being to make it into the Top 10!
For the second season in a row, we managed a creditable 10th place (following several years where we languished around 12th-13th position). Well done to all involved.
We had teams in nearly every age category, with most managing a Top 10 Team place, and the 8 Girls and 12 Boys medalling.

Confirmation of several new records
Confirmations are in for several new records from late 2008 and early 2009.
Harry Marks (see news item below) broke the club 12 year boys 200m record in Canberra at the Pacific School Games (25.02s) and then broke this record again at a Senior Hot Meet in January (24.96s).
Harry also broke the long standing (from 1995) 12 boys long jump record of 5.11m with a jump of 5.49m (which also won the silver medal).
Henry Newell picked up both the 13 boys 800m and 1500m records at the North Island Colgate Games in Wanganui in January (2.16.12s and 4.47.41s)
Ben Moynihan broke another long standing record in the 14 boys 1500m at the Auckland Junior 1500m Champs. This record had stood since 1987. Ben's time of 4.27.41s was a full 10 seconds faster.

More Club Records at the Auckland Junior 2000/3000m Champs.
5 records were established or broken at the 2000m and 3000m junior champs last weekend.
At this annual event, 10 and 11 year olds run 2000m and 12-14 year olds run 3000m.
Obviously one of Eastern's areas of strength is in middle distance track running and we continue to excel in this area of athletics.
As the 2000m and 3000m are not standard distances at most Junior meets, these records are recorded on our "Other Records" page

Silver for Harry Marks in Canberra
Representing New Zealand junior athletics, 12 year old Eastern Athlete Harry Marks scored a silver medal in the long jump at the Pacific School Games in Canberra.
Competing with an injury for part of the Games, Harry didn't manage to medal in his other specialist events, High Jump, 100m and 200m, but he competed with distinction and has continued the form that had him selected for Canberra into 2009.
Only 73 junior athletes were selected from the entire country so just making this team was a major achievement in itself.
Our favourite club Officials, Rodger and Denise also represented us at the Pacific School Games as they were New Zealand team officials (Denise for the second time).
The Pacific School Games are held in Australia every 4 years, bring athletes aged 10-19 from all over the Pacific, Asia, Africa and North America together, with Australian athletes competing in state teams.
The previous games were held in Melbourne just prior to the Commonwealth Games.

Counties Relays Championships - 26 Medals!!!
With teams in all but one age group, we achieved our best medal haul from a relays event for a very long time.
We scored a total of 26 medals in all - 4 of them Gold - including medals in each of the mixed-age medley relay events.
An especially strong 7 year old team medalled in every event available, backing up the success of last years 7 year old girl team (many of whom competed as 8 years olds yesterday).
We once again had good teams in the 12, 13 and 14 age groups, leading to good results in the respective age events and strengthening our medley relay teams.
Apart from the 7 years olds, our 8 girls, 9 boys, 12 boys, 13 girls and 14 boys and girls also did very well.

Harry Marks selected for New Zealand
Eastern athlete, Harry Marks has made the NZ Junior Athletic team travelling to the Pacific School Games in Canberra, November 2008.
Harry will compete as a 12 year old in four events - 100m, 200m Long Jump and High Jump.
Selection for this team means that Harry is 1st or 2nd ranked in the country for those events he will compete in. With athletes limited to
four events at the Games, Harry was unable to also compete in the Shot Put, although it appears that he reached qualifying standard for this event too.
The club congratulates Harry on his selection - which is outstanding in itself - and wishes him the very best in his competition.

Auckland Wins 12-13 Year Old Interprovincial Competition
On the back of the consistency and depth in the team, Auckland came from behind on the second day of the Inter-provincial competition in Wanganui at
Easter to win by around 2000 points from Wellington.
All Easter athletes acquited themselves very well with several personal bests and some new club records (confirmation from Athletics NZ yet to
arrive).

Inter-Provincial Team Announced
Eastern has 4 representatives in this 2008 Auckland Representative 12/13 Years Interprovincial team travelling to Wanganui at Easter. We also have
one athlete representing Counties Manukau.
The Interprovincial competition is a points based event held over two days. It encompasses all events and is usually a trial of depth within the
regions as it is consistency across the genders and ages that gains the points rather than which team has the top athletes.
Last year in Christchurch, Auckland just won the competition (from Wellington) with the closest margin for many years.

Auckland Champs - 15th March Mt Smart Stadium.
After a false start on the 1st due to extreme weather, the Auckland Champs was successfully held on Saturday in bright sun.
It was a huge event for Eastern with an unusually large medal tally (details to be posted on Auckland Champs results page once the finalised list is
received) and several new club records established.
New club records were set by the following athletes:
Mayah Coleman (7 Girls) Shot Put 6.18m
Harry Marks (11 Boys) 100m 12.89s

; 200m 26.67

; Shot Put 10.86
Brandon James (13 Boys) 800m 2.20.70
Jaxon Bonnici (14 Boys) 400m 54.36
James Watt (14 Boys) 800m 2.08.50
Luke Ibbs (14 Boys) High Jump 1.66m
Michael Bradley (14 Boys) Discus 42.17m
Mayah's discus throw broke the old record by over 4.5m. Jaxon broke his own record of 55.44m for the 14 boys 400m, set earlier in the year at the
North Island Colgate Games. Michael also broke his own Colgate Games record in the shot put.

Trans-Tasman Carnival - 20th January, Trusts Stadium, Waitakere.
The four Eastern athletes acquitted themselves extremely well, contributing to Auckland's first win over New South Wales since 2001. The competition
see-sawed all day and the winning margin was only 11 points.
Eastern's Harry Marks was selected as Auckland's boys team captain.
All registered 10 and 11 year olds are eligible to trial for the Trans-Tasman team and with the 2009 challenge scheduled for Homebush Stadium in
Sydney, all 9 year olds should be keeping fit over the winter, ready for the October trials.

Colgate South Island Junior Champs - 11-13th January QEII Stadium, Christchurch.
Several Eastern athletes made the trek to Christchurch the weekend following the North Island games in Taranaki.
Those that went to the South Island got to compete against a large number of clubs and athletes we wouldn't otherwise come up against.
7 year old Yasmin Shakes put in the performance of the games from an Eastern point of view with a huge personal best and club record of 3.70m in the
long jump, breaking a 19 year old record.

Colgate North Island Junior Champs 4-6th January TET Stadium, Inglewood, Taranaki
A big team of Eastern Athletes travelled to Inglewood in Taranaki for this year's Colgates.
Our children made several event finals - the large team allowed us to enter several relay categories - with a healthy medal return as well.
Harry Marks (11 Boys) was the stand out individual athlete with silver medals in the 100 and 200m sprints and bronze in the high jump.
A reflection of the effort and performance from our athletes was the 3 new club records set:
14 boys – Michael Bradley - Shot Put 11.12m (previous Rex-Jordan Tatoa 2007 10.43m)
12 girls – Sarah Bradley - 80m hurdles 19.0 (new event)
14 boys – Jaxon Bonnici - 400m – 55.44 (previous C. Brown 1988 57.13)
Our 14 year old medley relay team also picked up a bronze medal.

Auckland Relays
As with Counties a fortnight earlier, we had a pleasing turnout for the Auckland Relay Day even taking into account that the event was held very
close to Christmas this year meaning a couple of age groups were affected by family holidays etc.
The standard was very, very high with 18 clubs entering large numbers of athletes across all ages.
Eastern managed bronze medals in three field events, the 11yo Discus, 14yo Shot and 14yo Long Jump (field relays involve 2 boys and 2 girls
per team).
We made finals in most of the 4x100m and 4x200m sprint categories we had teams entered in, and throughout the day we had a number of very
close 4th and 5th place finishes where, but for a baton change here or there, we might have managed more medals.
In particular, our Medley Relay teams were unlucky not to medal in their respective races.

Counties Relays
At the first major event of the season, Eastern had a much larger representation than in previous years and our return was 14 medals across a range
of ages and events.
We did particularly well in the Boys, Girls and Mixed senior medley relays - where the legs are 1 x 800m, 1 x 400m, 2x200m and 2x100m and one athlete
from each of the 10-14 age groups must compete - with 9 year old girls running (and winning medals) the final 100m in each race (yes, even the boys
one) because we had no 10 year olds at the event.
Athletes are now looking forward to the final relay event of the season (Auckland Relay Champs) at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday 15th December

Regional Top Ten Competition
For the first time in several years, Eastern fielded a complete team in the Top Ten with athletes in every age group. This was reflected in our overall placing of 8th.
Several teams (pairs) also achieved "Top Ten" status in their individual age groups with the 11 Boys pairing of Scott Worrall and Jordan Vetter winning their event outright.
It was great to have Eastern athletes competing in every event - especially the 13 and 14 year olds. Well done to everyone involved, including the club management and age managers who organised the team at short notice.

Human Potential - New documentary series - Monday nights 7.30 TV One
Those who caught the first show on Monday 30th January will have seen several Eastern children filmed at the last Trans-Tasman trial at Ericsson Stadium.......not to mention our esteemed Chairman on the starter's pistol!
Apart from seeing Eastern uniforms throughout the show it was extremely interesting, covering a variety of international research about what people can do to optimise their own physical and mental potential and providing information on how parents can encourage their children's potential.
