Auckland wins Trans-Tasman Challenge

Auckland backed up the win over a strong New South Wales team in 2014 with another win this year.

The Trans-Tasman is a 10 and 11 year old competition held on an alternating basis in Auckland or Sydney each year, featuring the best of Auckland (plus some other upper North Island athletes by invitation) and very strong competition from the NWS athletes.

Sean McPhee (pictured in 3rd place)in the 400m and Jonny Young in the 100m won bronze medals this year; the first individual medals by Eastern athetes for almost a decade. The Trans-Tasman standard is very high. We have had numerous examples over the years where an Eastern athlete has broken a club record without even medalling, so these efforts by Sean and Jonny are notable.

2015 Inter-Provicial Championships
Eight Eastern athletes were selected in the Auckland Team for the Grade 12/13 Interprovincial teams event hosted by the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Centre at Hamilton over Easter weekend.

There is a high standard and there are not many seasons where Eastern has eight athletes in the Auckland team so well done to all chosen.

Our representatives were: Roshan Baroumandi, Chelsea Oliver, Anna Schwabe, Lucy Burrell, Samantha Watson, Michael Sheed, Bono Napota and Matthew Eady.

Rodger Brickland, Cathryn Oliver and Chris Eady were also part of the Auckland management team.

Lucy also broke the club 12 girls 800m record at this event.

The Auckland team came 3rd overall.

Senior Club Championships

A great afternoon's athletics and two more club records.

10G Discus – Ashleigh Gallagher 23.68m and 11G Long Jump – Ella Russ 4.58m.

Ella's Long Jump breaks another of the club's very long standing records. The 11 girls long jump had not been broken since 1991.

Ashleigh's record breaks her own effort at the Pentathlon Champs a few weeks ago.

Trans-Tasman 2015
The Trans-Tasman is a 10 and 11 year old exchange competition held in Auckland or Sydney each year, featuring very strong competition from the NWS athletes.

The tour is usually about 10 days and athletes compete in several invitation events leading up to the actual Trans Tasman competition. The 2015 event will be held at the Campbelltown Athletics Track on Sunday, 18 January. Competing in the Australian climate is often very hot for our athletes, but it is always a great experience.

To put her dominance in perspective, she has extended the previous 13G club record by almost 11 metres this season.

Auckland Champs Results - 28 Medals - 6 New Club Records

A large team of 38 Eastern athletes competed at the 2014 Auckland Junior Champs at Mt Smart over the weekend of 22nd/23rd March.

20 of our athletes won a total of 28 medals (note this is in addition to the 7 medals won at the 2000/3000m champs - see below).

As expected a very strong showing in middle distance accounted for a significant proportion of Eastern's success, but the fact that we medalled in every event is very encouraging and there are clearly talented athletes at all levels throughout the club.

It is notable that 15 of the medals were won by 10 and 11 year olds.

Running for Sacred Heart College, James Uhlenberg continued Eastern's strong middle distance pedigree with a new 1500m record set at Secondary School National Championships on Sunday 8th December in Hamilton.
James will have further chances later in the season to improve on this and his efforts as a 12 and 13 year old suggest he may reset this record several times before the 2013/14 season is over.

Success at Counties Manukau Relay Champs
The Counties Relays Champs is usually held early in the athletics season and is almost always a strong event for Eastern. 2013 has been no exception with a beautiful sunny day producing another 16 medals across 9 age/gender categories.

Boys and Girls teams in each age grade compete for track (relays) and field (combined scoring) medals, and this year we had teams in all but three age grades.

The 11 Boys were one runner short so Tiana Salesa (10 year old girl) stepped up to give them a full compliment (younger athletes may replace older and girls may replace boys). This team managed to medal in two events!!! - see below

Also notable was Mayah Coleman continuing her steady demolition of club throwing records (at the end of the 2012/2013 season she held 7 Discus or Shot records) with a new 13 Girls Discus record of 27.48m. This, Mayah's 8th current record, broke a 25 year old mark by almost 3 metres.

Eastern Representatives join Auckland Inter-Provincial Team

James Uhlenberg, Luke Paanakker, Olivia Gordon and Madeline Godfrey have made the Auckland team to compete at the 12/13 year old Interprovicial Championships in Timaru.

The Inter-Provincials are held every Easter and comprise a points-based teams competition featuring the best athletes from every region. This year Auckland will be looking to regain the national title having lost it to Wellington in a very close result last year.

Good luck to our 2013 athletes. We're sure you'll do the club and Auckland proud.

2013 Auckland Champs Results

Auckland's first rain for several weeks didn't hold up the Auckland Champs at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday 16th of March.

Yet another club record was broken with Lucy Burrell breaking one of our oldest records - the 10 girls 800m which has stood since 1987. This continues Lucy's consistent form this season and give her the 800m and 1500m record pair.

We had 34 athletes competing, a fantastic turnout, and bought home 11 medals. We also had plenty of athletes making finals.

35 Medals and another Club Record Broken at Counties Manukau Champs - Sat 23rd Feb

Well, we thought last year's 21 medals was a fantastic effort, but the 23 Eastern athletes that competed in the 2013 champs totally eclipsed that result with one of the club's best medal returns ever!

While we always expect strong middle distance results from most events, over the past few years the CM Champs has seens our younger athletes make a strong contribution. In the case of the 7 year olds this is usually their first taste of real competition.

Well done to everyone who competed. Sending a team of 23 is a great effort in its own right and - win or lose - just seeing plenty of athletes competing in Eastern blue is always a gratifying site for volunteers and committee members.

Also notable was Samantha R Watson's new 11 girls highjump record. This record had stood since 1998. Congratulations Samantha.

Our results:

7G
Sophie Sones 2nd long jump; 2nd 60m
Madeleine Leigh 3rd 60m; 3rd 200m
Anika Rooke 2nd shot put

Another very strong effort by our middle distance athletes from the 2013 edition of the 2000m (10 and 11yrs) and 3000m (12, 13 and 14 yrs) champs held at Pakuranga on Saturday 16th Feb.

Madeleine Godfrey brought in a bronze in the 12 girls 3000m.

Then in the 13 girls 3000m Georgia Clode (like Lucy with a big lead over the field) won in 10.48.59 and Millie Anderson following her in for bronze.

In another 1st/2nd double James Uhlenberg won the 13 boys 3000m in an new club record time of 10.25.45, with MaxWhelan-Platt getting the silver. Finally Daniel Chapman took out silver in the 14 boys 3000m. This was also a new club record (10.37.55).

Top Ten Results - Saturday 9th February

Held at a very hot Massey Park, Papakura our team managed 11th place in the annual Top Ten where teams of 2 athletes from each age group compete for points.

Obviously the goal is usually to be in the first 10 teams, however we were short in a couple of age groups - no 8 girls or 9 boys - and a couple more only had a single competitor - 7 boys, 14 girls - and this cost us a few precious points.

Individual results were:

7 girls - 8th
7 boys - 12th (one competitor)
8 boys - 12th
9 girls - 5th
10 girls - 6th
10 boys - 10th
11 girls - 10th
11 boys 12th
12 girls - 10th
12 boys - 8th
13 girls - 8th
13 boys - 6th
14 boys - 7th
14 girls - 11th (one competitor)

A record at Trans-Tasman

Lucy Burrell re-broke the club 10 girls 1500m at the Trans-Tasman held on 13th January at Cambelltown Sports Stadium, NSW.

Lucy was already the 10 girls 1500m record holder having broken the old mark at the Night Of Miles which is effectively the Auckland middle distance championship.

The Trans-Tasman is a 10 and 11 year old competition held in Auckland or Sydney each year, featuring very strong competition from the NWS athletes.

Competing in the Australian climate is often very hot for our athletes, but it is always a great experience.

Colgate Games Results

The 2013 edition of the North Island Colgate games was held at a very sunny Inglewood, Taranaki on the 4th-6th January. Temperatures reached 31 degrees over the weekend.

Eastern had two medallists - Mayah Coleman in the 12 girls discus and James Uhlenberg in the 13 boys 1500m.

Mayah won gold in her discus event, in the process also smashing the previous club record by over 13 metres! Her winning throw of 34.08m eclipsed Cara Blachard's 20.76m set at the 2007 Club Champs, and was nearly 3m clear of the second place finisher. In fact all of her throws would have won gold.

Mayah has been working her way through several of the club's throwing records since starting as a 7 year old.

James continued his success in middle distance with a 13 boys 1500m bronze. He also travelled to Invercargill for the South Island Colgate Games the following weekend and won the bronze at that event too.

Eastern Emerging Talent - results from 7-9 year olds (events do not have semi-finals and finals and penants rather than medals are awarded to under 10 year olds)

7B Harrison O’Brien 3rd 60m, 3rd 100m
8B Thomas Wynn 1st 100m, 1st discus, 1st long jump, 3rd 200m
8B Jesse Coleman 1st discus , 2nd 60m

Results - 3 Medals and 2 new club records at Night Of Miles

The John Walker Night of Miles doubles as the Auckland Junior 1500m Championships. This year held at Pakuranga on Saturday 15th December.

Eastern's very good recent history continued this year with Lucy Burrell and Georgia Clode winning the 10 and 13 girls respectively and setting new club records, and James Uhlenberg scoring a silver in the 13 boys.

Georgia and James also medalled last year as 12 year olds.

Lucy's time - 5.31.25 - beat a 2001 record of 5.34.63 set by Christine James at the same meet.

Georgia's time 4.56.19 - shaded Audrey Gregan's 2010 North island Secondary Schools time of 4.56.52.

Results - 5 More Medals at Auckland Relay Champs

At Massey Park, Papakura, the Auckland Relay Champs were held on a hot, windy day.

Unlike the Counties Champs we didn't have a huge showing from our older (10+) athletes and it was our younger members again who showed through.

Club officials report that we had a number of teams who were very competitive but just missed out on medals with 4th place finishes.

12B 1500m record for James Uhlenberg

James Uhlenberg was our only representative to make the Auckland team at the 12/13 year old Interprovicial Championships this year, but he made his mark with yet another Eastern middle distance record going down.

Finishing 3rd in the 1500m, James ran 4.45.60 to take the record off Sam Heslin, another of the very good young middle distance boys that have gone through the club in recent years. James also ran strongly in the 800m, but was just over 1s off that record which is also held by Sam.

In the end Auckland was shaded by Wellington in one of the closest competitions in recent history.

Good luck James!

Auckland Champs - 10 Medals

The 2012 edition of the Auckland Junior Champs saw another long day that went past 6pm to fit in all events.

With an impressive 40 athletes qualified from the club, it seemed that a good medal result might be expected and this proved to be the case, with 7 athletes bringing in a total haul of 10 medals (James Uhlenberg's silver in the 12 year old 800m notable in that it was the only medal of the 10 won be a male!).

Apart from the national Colgate Games events the Auckland Champs is always easily the most competitive event of the season so these are the hardest won medals.

Medals as follows:

8G – ELLA GREENWOOD
Silver 200m
Bronze 100m
Bronze 60m

9G – MADISON DONNELLY

3 Club Records at Auckland 2000m/3000m Champs - Saturday 18th Feb

On a hot day at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga 5 Eastern Athletes continued the club's strong middle distance record.

This year we didn't have any 10 or 11 year old representatives, so all of our performances were at the 3000m distance run by the older athletes.

The Eastern 12 girls almost pulled off a remarkable trifecta with Georgia Clode winning, Millie Anderson in second and Isabelle Moody just missing out on 3rd place.

Georgia's time of 11.36.57s is a new club record (Millie also went under the old record).

In the 12 boys event James Uhlenberg also set a new club record in running 10.43.68, and Daniel Chapman set yet another club record in the 13 boys with 11.12.84. Obviously this will be under threat when James runs in the 13 boys nest season.

Top Ten Results - Saturday 11th Feb Mt Smart

The 2012 edition of the Auckland Regional Top Ten - where 2 athletes from each age/sex compete as a team - saw Eastern with teams in every division, a notable result in itself .

The target, as the name says, is for each team to finish in a Top 10 position. Not an easy task with clubs from across the region sending their best athletes.

As well as the age group scores, the club as a whole accumulates points for each performance and the overall goal is to have Eastern also make it into the Top 10 in the club championship.

Team manager Judith Uhlenberg reports a mixed day weather-wise and an outstanding effort from all of our teams. Nobody medalled - although the 13 Boys just missed out with 4th in their division - but a consistent performance across the day saw Eastern finish in 9th position. Target achieved - well done teams!

Records broken at Interprovincials

Riandri De Bruyn broke two more club records at the Interprovincials held in Palmerston North on 28/29th January.

Her 13.48s set a new club mark for the 14 girls 80m Hurdles and her Discus throw of 25.34 broke the previous record by over 2m.

Colgate Games - 6th-8th January - Tauranga

17 Eastern athletes competed at the North Island Colgate Games held this year in Tauranga.

Despite heavy rain and wind throughout most of the weekend, several personal bests were recorded and Mayah Coleman won Gold in the 11 Girls Discus (and broke the club Shot Put record although not medalling).

Divisional Pennant winners Grade 7 -9 (no times or overall placings are recorded for 7-9 track events):

7 Girls
Tanisha Griffiths 3rd Discus

Jesse Coleman 3rd 200m

11 Girls
Mayah Coleman Gold Discus 25.92m
5th   Shot Put 9.46m (New club record)

One athlete - James Uhlenberg - travelled to the South Island Colgate Games the following weekend in Nelson (in contrast to Tauranga, beautifully sunny).

James won two medals in his specialist middle distance events while also making the hurdles and 400m finals:

12 Boys James Uhlenberg Silver Medal 1500m 4.57.32
                                     Bronze Medal 800m 2.25.99

John Walker Night of Miles - Saturday 17th December

The John Walker Night of Miles doubles as the Auckland Junior 1500m Championships.

Eastern has a very good recent history in this event and our 12 year olds didn't let us down this year with Georgia Clode 2nd in the girls and James Uhlenberg 3rd in the boys events respectively.

10th December 2011
5 medals at Auckland Relay Championships

Auckland relay champs were on Saturday 3rd December at Massey Park, Papakura.

We only had five teams entered in this competition but managed 5 medals. Once again the 7’s and 8’s proved to be the most successful of the Eastern teams.

Results:

7 boys 4x200m Gold

8 Girls 4x100m Gold
4x 200m Gold

11 Girls 4x100m Bronze
4x200m Bronze

We also had teams in the 12 boys and 10 girls. These just missed out on medalling.
The 8 girls, 10 girls and 11 girls also competed as all girl field teams against the two boy/two girl teams.
The younger group of 8yr girls having to put up with a bit of stick from their boy competitors but they took it in their stride and performed well.

29th March 2011
Auckland Champs - 19March Mt Smart Stadium

As is usually the case, Auckland Champs was a long day, finishing after 6pm. Unlike the disrupted Counties Manukau Champs a nice day enjoyed by all who participated.

Eastern brought home a total of 19 medals, maintaining our high standards of the last few years. As usual we played to our middle distance strengths with more than half of the medals gained for distances between 800m and 3000m.

Three club records were broken - all achieved while scoring silver medals and all breaking records set in 2008:

Bailey Stewart's 14 boys 400m time of 54.23 broke Jaxon Bonnici's Auckland Champs record (Bailey subsequently rebroke this at North Island Secondary Schools champs).

Riandri de Bruyn set a new club record in the 13 girls 80m Hurdles. Her time of 14.95 breaking Cara Blanchard's 2008 15.01 set at Interprovincials.

Finally Sam Heslin set a new 12 boys 800m record of 2.20.60 breaking Henry Newell's 2.21.90 from Interprovincials.

De-Arna and Leanne Griffiths also established club standards in the 10 and 12 girls 1200m walks respectively.

6th March 2011
Counties Manukau Champs

Originally scheduled for Saturday 5th, torrential rain unfortunately saw Counties manukau postpone to the following day. Sunday's weather was also dicey and with our own club champs in the afternoon it was understandable that only three of our (original eleven) registered athletes attended.

With only the morning to compete, our athletes also weren't able to compete in all their favoured events, so they did very well in that all three medalled.

Matthew Eady won Silver in the 8 yr boys 60m.

James Uhlenberg won Gold in the 11 boys 1500m and Silver in the high jump.

Riandri de Bruyn won Gold in the 13 girls hurdles and Silver in the 1500m.

8th March 2011
Auckland 2000/3000m Champs

More strong middle distance performances from Eastern athletes at the 2000/3000m champs held at Pakuranga on Saturday 26th February.

Georgia Clode won the 11 Girls 2000m setting a new club record of 7.26.93.

A nice double saw James Uhlenberg 2nd and James Matthews 3rd in the 11 Boys 2000m.

Daniel Chapman was 3rd in 12 Boys 3000m, with his time of 11.32.94 smashing the old club record.

Daisy Archibald was 3rd in the 13 Girls and the versatile Riandri de Bruyn was 4th in the same race.

(10 and 11 year olds run 2000m and 12-14 year olds run 3000m in these chamnpionships)

Top Ten

The Auckland Top Ten competition was held at a hot Mt Smart on the 19th Feb.

A great day was had by all and 26 Eastern athletes competed, meaning we had entries in all age/gender groups except 10/13 boys and 14 girls.

Two of our teams medalled in what is usually a very strong competition. 3rd places to the 9 Boys team of Matthew Wynne and Ollie Kelly and the 7 Girls team of Tiana Salesa and Charlotte Gordon. Our 12 and 14 Boys teams were both apparently unlucky not to medal, both finishing close in 4th positions.

Overall Eastern finished in 8th place of all teams actross the Auckland region - a creditable performance and a couple of places higher than last year.

19th February 2011
Pentathlon - 5th February Mt Smart Stadium

9 year old Matthew Wynne was the only Eastern athlete to medal at the 2011 pentathlon.

His bronze was a good result given a large field of competitors.

28th January 2011
Another long standing record broken

Three Eastern athletes travelled to the South Island Colgate Games at Logan Park, Dunedin on the weekend of 14th-16th January.

In yet another example of the club's long standing records being broken in the past couple of seasons, Harry Marks set a new 14 year boys Long Jump record with a jump of 6.23m. The previous record of 5.99m was set in 1998.

Harry currently holds 11 club records, and would probably hold more but for time spent out injured in previous seasons .

12th January 2011
North Island Colgate Games - 7th, 8th, 9th January 2011 - Hastings

According to Team Manager Judith Uhlenberg the first day of competition saw temperatures approaching 35 degrees on the track as well as high humidity, but by Sunday cold southerlies with rain made competition difficult and uncomfortable. A strong headwind added to the challenging conditions.

Our team of 14 ahtletes did well to compete in such extreme conditions, with most of our senior athletes (10-14 year olds) reaching finals in their events.

8yr boys – Matthew Eady - 1st 100m, 2nd 200m, 2nd 60m.

9yr boys – Matthew Wynne - 1st 200m, 1st 100m, 2nd 60m, 2nd long jump.

9 yr girls – Samantha Watson - 3rd 100m.

14 yr girls – Audrey Gregan - 2nd 1500m.

20th December 2010
John Walker Night of Miles - Saturday 18th December

This event, which doubles as the Auckland Junior 1500m Championship was held in torrential rain but this didn't stop our athletes recording 3 medals and 2 new club records.

James Uhlenberg won the 11 Boys Silver medal

Georgia Clode won the 11 Girls Silver medal and in the process broke the previous 1500m club record (which has stood for 21 years) by over 8 seconds.

Sam Heslin, in the 12 Boys, took our third Silver and also broke Henry Newell's 2008 record by almost 7 seconds. Sam now holds the 11 and 12 Year old 1500m records.

Awesome efforts in pouring rain!

We entered 9 teams across all age groups and came away with 8 medals, with our 7 year olds following up their good performances at the Counties Manukau Relays.

The field relays are run as Mixed teams of 2 girls and 2 boys so the 7 year old results below are particularly notable in that they competed as a team of 4 girls in the Long Jump and 3 Girls/1Boy in the Shot Put and till medalled in these events.

25th November 2010
Counties Relays Championships - 25 Medals!!!

Another successful day for Eastern at the Counties Relays held at Jellicoe Park, Manurewa last weekend.

After a couple of early showers, the weather provided a very good day for athletics.

Nearly all Eastern athletes who attended won medals and we also had a good turnout of parents - thank you to those who helped with Eastern's rostered duty at the lane changeover (special thanks to the "Blonde Hairdresser") .

With teams in most age groups we won 25 medals (7 gold, 5 silver, 13 bronze), all but matching our best ever relay medal haul of 26 in 2008, and exceeding it in the number of gold medals (4 won in 2008).

Another similarity to 2008 was that both results were built on very strong 7 and 8 year old teams, augering well for the standard at the club in the next few years.

2 new records at Club Champs
Ephraim Salesa set a new 7 year boys 60m record at 9.66s, breaking Daniel Chapman's 2006 mark.

It's certainly been a season for some of our really old records to go. Samantha Watson (8 girls) has taken one with a long jump of 3.86m. This broke a 1991 record by 2cm. If this is any guide, Samantha could be in her mid-late 20s before this one goes again!

6th March 2010
15 Medals, 7 Club Records at Auckland Champs
A long day that started at 8am with the last events finishing at 6pm.

Like the Counties Manukau Champs it was very hot and dusty throughout the day, including some small dust storms, but there were also short rainy periods - i.e. typical Auckland weather.

2010 turned out to be another very good year for Eastern at the Auckland Champs with 18 medals (if we include the 1500m Champs which are now held separately to the main Championship day).

8 Girls Samantha Watson 3rd long jump
9 Girls Yasmin Shakes 3rd 100m, 3rd 200m Mayah Coleman 2nd Discus (23.89 new record)
10 Boys Fraser McKinlay 1st 400m, 1st 800m
11 Boys Sam Heslin 1st 800m (2.23.91 new record)
12 girls Riandri de Bruyn 1st 100m Hurdles
13 Boys Harry Marks 1st Long Jump (6.05 new record), 1st 100m (11.98 new record)
Charlie Staite 3rd Shot Put
14 boys Jordan Vetter 1st 100m hurdles (15.13 new record), 2nd 400m, 3rd High Jump (1.70 new record)
Henry Newell 2nd 800m (2.08.08 new record)

Mayah (pictured) broke her own Colgate Games record from January - prior to that the previous record had lasted 9 years.

Sam also broke his own Colgate Games record. Previously the club 800m record had lasted 20 years!

Harry continues his trawl through the club records, resetting sprint and jump marks as he goes. His 2010 performances better those of Nick Thomas (100m) and Michael Bradley (long jump) both set in 2007.

Having established the 14 boys 100m hurdles standard at the Colgate games (ie the record was previously vacant) Jordan has now set a record by bettering this. He also continues his high jump form of the last few years in adding 4cm to the previous record (another long standing record - set in 1998).

Eastern has traditionally been relatively strong in middle distance so our records are fairly strong in this area. Henry's effort to better James Watt's 2008 (bronze medal) 800m run means he now holds the 12, 13 and 14 year records for 800m.

29 Medals at Counties Manukau Champs
Held on grass at Manurewa this year - due to the unavailability of Massey Park - 13 Eastern athletes (of a total of 19 competing) scored a haul of 29 medals.

The day was very, very hot but that didn't stop an excellent set of results including Jordan Vetter breaking the 14 year boys high jump with a new mark of 1.72 (previous was 1.66 set by Luke Ibbs in 2008).

7 Girls Madison Davis-Donnelly 1st Long Jump, 3rd 200m, 3rd 60m, 3rd 100m
7 Boys Hunter Jackson 2nd Long Jump
Matthew Eady 2nd 60m, 2nd 200m
8 Boys Matthew Wynne 2nd Long Jump
10 Boys Fraser McKinlay 1st 1500m, 1st 400m, 1st Long Jump, 3rd High Jump
Joel Ibbs 3rd 200m
James Uhlenberg 1st 800m, 2nd 1500m
11 girls Michelle Eggins-Pickering 3rd Shot Put
12 girls Riandri de Bruyn 1st 100m Hurdles
14 girls Stevie Hackett 2nd Shot Put, 2nd 100m, 3rd Long Jump
Alana Ibbs 2nd 200m, 3rd High Jump, 3rd 400m
14 boys Jordan Vetter 1st 100m hurdles, 1st 400m, 1st high jump, 3rd 800m
Mikyle Frank 2nd 100m, 3rd 200m

25th Feb 2010
Top Ten - 6th Feb 2010

The 2010 Top Ten saw Eastern 10th place - following the sequence of several years now where we have hovered around 9th and 10th but staying within the all important Top Ten (of the 18-20 Auckland region clubs).

This was especially notable as we competed without teams in the 7 and 9 Boys or 13 Girls and one 12 Boy competed alone. With teams competing in these age groups, we might have finished as high as 6th

Three of our teams medalled in their individual age groups. Jordan Vetter & Mikyle Frank won the 14 Boys, while Charlie Staite & Harry Marks and Yasmin Shakes & Isabel McGillivray were second in the 13 Boys and 9 Girls respectively.

13 new records from Colgate Games
With the Colgate Games being help in Auckland over a beautiful weekend this year, Eastern athletes had every opportunity to capture medals and records and they didn't disappoint.

53 Athletes took part in the games (with 3 also travelling to the South Island Colgate Games held in Timura the follwing week), for a total of 8 medals and 13 new club records.
Especially notable were Fraser McKinley who (winning the Gold) took another 3 seconds off his 10 Boys 1500m record set just before Christmas, Nicole Fairbrother who broke the club 14 Girls Long Jump record at the North Island Colgates and broke it again the following weekend at the South Island Games and Harry Marks who took an enormous 0.91s (and Bronze medal) off the 13 Boys 200m record set by Nick Thomas a couple of years ago and then followed that up by adding 23cm to the previous Long Jump record on his was to winning the Gold medal in that event.

Trans-Tasman representatives from Eastern The following athletes represented Eastern with distinction in the Auckland Trans-Tasman team competing against New South Wales at Waitakere Stadium on Sunday 17th January.

Lisa Fairbrother
Louise Yates
Caitlin Dodd
Sophia Frankish
Fraser Hamilton
Fraser McKinlay
Sam Heslin
Daniel Chapman
James Uhlenberg

As is always the case, the club also had significant representation in the organisation and administration of the Trans-Tasman event.

Rodger and Denise were both members of the executive committee, Rodger and Kim Anderson were both selectors and Denise was also an administrator.

Fraser McKinley and Sam Heslin continued their strong seasons with Silver medals in the 10 and 11 Boys 1500m respectively. The standard in Trans-Tasman competition is always extremely high, especially on the track, and this is a very good effort from Fraser and SAM.

First records of the season
Club records for both the 10 and 11 year old boys were broken at the Auckland Junior 1500m Championship run in conjunction with the John Walker Night of Miles on December 19th.

With an outstanding time for 10 year olds, both Fraser McKinlay and James Uhlenberg took several seconds off Brandon James' 2005 Auckland Champs run, which was an impressive effort itself for those who remember it.
Fraser ran 5.08.05 and James 5.10.08 for an Eastern gold/silver double.

Sam Heslin then ran 4.48.75 to smash the 11 year old 1500m record set by Thomas Hood in 2001 by almost 13 seconds.

Clearly the future of boys middle distance running at Eastern is looking especially bright with these boys running 5 minutes and under at this stage of the season.

Top 10 Results

Mt Smart hosted the regional Top 10 Champs on Sunday 15th February.

The Top 10 is open to every junior club in the Auckland and Counties regions and involves teams of 2 boys and 2 girls per age group competing for points

In addition to the medals available to athletes, the accumulated points for all athletes are counted to give an overall club placing - with the aim obviously being to make it into the Top 10!

For the second season in a row, we managed a creditable 10th place (following several years where we languished around 12th-13th position). Well done to all involved.

We had teams in nearly every age category, with most managing a Top 10 Team place, and the 8 Girls and 12 Boys medalling.

Confirmation of several new records

Confirmations are in for several new records from late 2008 and early 2009.

Harry Marks (see news item below) broke the club 12 year boys 200m record in Canberra at the Pacific School Games (25.02s) and then broke this record again at a Senior Hot Meet in January (24.96s).
Harry also broke the long standing (from 1995) 12 boys long jump record of 5.11m with a jump of 5.49m (which also won the silver medal).

Henry Newell picked up both the 13 boys 800m and 1500m records at the North Island Colgate Games in Wanganui in January (2.16.12s and 4.47.41s)

Ben Moynihan broke another long standing record in the 14 boys 1500m at the Auckland Junior 1500m Champs. This record had stood since 1987. Ben's time of 4.27.41s was a full 10 seconds faster.

10th February 2009
More Club Records at the Auckland Junior 2000/3000m Champs.

5 records were established or broken at the 2000m and 3000m junior champs last weekend.

At this annual event, 10 and 11 year olds run 2000m and 12-14 year olds run 3000m.

Obviously one of Eastern's areas of strength is in middle distance track running and we continue to excel in this area of athletics.

As the 2000m and 3000m are not standard distances at most Junior meets, these records are recorded on our "Other Records" page Here

Pictured are Sally and Asleigh just after the start of the 14 girls 3000m race.

Silver for Harry Marks in Canberra

Representing New Zealand junior athletics, 12 year old Eastern Athlete Harry Marks scored a silver medal in the long jump at the Pacific School Games in Canberra.

Competing with an injury for part of the Games, Harry didn't manage to medal in his other specialist events, High Jump, 100m and 200m, but he competed with distinction and has continued the form that had him selected for Canberra into 2009.

Only 73 junior athletes were selected from the entire country so just making this team was a major achievement in itself.

Our favourite club Officials, Rodger and Denise also represented us at the Pacific School Games as they were New Zealand team officials (Denise for the second time).

The Pacific School Games are held in Australia every 4 years, bring athletes aged 10-19 from all over the Pacific, Asia, Africa and North America together, with Australian athletes competing in state teams.

The previous games were held in Melbourne just prior to the Commonwealth Games.

Counties Relays Championships - 26 Medals!!!

With teams in all but one age group, we achieved our best medal haul from a relays event for a very long time.

We scored a total of 26 medals in all - 4 of them Gold - including medals in each of the mixed-age medley relay events.

An especially strong 7 year old team medalled in every event available, backing up the success of last years 7 year old girl team (many of whom competed as 8 years olds yesterday).

We once again had good teams in the 12, 13 and 14 age groups, leading to good results in the respective age events and strengthening our medley relay teams.

Apart from the 7 years olds, our 8 girls, 9 boys, 12 boys, 13 girls and 14 boys and girls also did very well.

The 2008/9 season has seen huge numbers at registration, especially on the senior track.

With registrations still coming in for all age groups, the record numbers of the 2006/7 season may yet be exceeded.

Girls Ages 4,5,6 and 7
Boys Ages 4 and 6

Harry Marks selected for New Zealand

Eastern athlete, Harry Marks has made the NZ Junior Athletic team travelling to the Pacific School Games in Canberra, November 2008.

Harry will compete as a 12 year old in four events - 100m, 200m Long Jump and High Jump.

Selection for this team means that Harry is 1st or 2nd ranked in the country for those events he will compete in. With athletes limited to four events at the Games, Harry was unable to also compete in the Shot Put, although it appears that he reached qualifying standard for this event too.

The club congratulates Harry on his selection - which is outstanding in itself - and wishes him the very best in his competition.

Auckland Wins 12-13 Year Old Interprovincial Competition

On the back of the consistency and depth in the team, Auckland came from behind on the second day of the Inter-provincial competition in Wanganui at Easter to win by around 2000 points from Wellington.

All Easter athletes acquited themselves very well with several personal bests and some new club records (confirmation from Athletics NZ yet to arrive).

Inter-Provincial Team Announced

Eastern has 4 representatives in this 2008 Auckland Representative 12/13 Years Interprovincial team travelling to Wanganui at Easter. We also have one athlete representing Counties Manukau.

The Interprovincial competition is a points based event held over two days. It encompasses all events and is usually a trial of depth within the regions as it is consistency across the genders and ages that gains the points rather than which team has the top athletes.

Last year in Christchurch, Auckland just won the competition (from Wellington) with the closest margin for many years.

Eastern representatives:

Jordan Vetter
Henry Newell
Nicole Fairbrother
Sarah Bradley
Cara Blanchard (Counties)
Sally Wilkins (Counties)

Auckland Champs - 15th March Mt Smart Stadium.

After a false start on the 1st due to extreme weather, the Auckland Champs was successfully held on Saturday in bright sun.

It was a huge event for Eastern with an unusually large medal tally (details to be posted on Auckland Champs results page once the finalised list is received) and several new club records established.

New club records were set by the following athletes:

Mayah Coleman (7 Girls)      Shot Put 6.18m
Harry Marks (11 Boys)          100m 12.89s
                                         200m 26.67
                                         Shot Put 10.86
Brandon James (13 Boys)     800m 2.20.70
Jaxon Bonnici (14 Boys)        400m 54.36
James Watt (14 Boys)          800m 2.08.50
Luke Ibbs (14 Boys)             High Jump 1.66m
Michael Bradley (14 Boys)     Discus 42.17m

Mayah's discus throw broke the old record by over 4.5m. Jaxon broke his own record of 55.44m for the 14 boys 400m, set earlier in the year at the North Island Colgate Games. Michael also broke his own Colgate Games record in the shot put.

1st February 2008
Trans-Tasman Carnival - 20th January, Trusts Stadium, Waitakere.

The four Eastern athletes acquitted themselves extremely well, contributing to Auckland's first win over New South Wales since 2001. The competition see-sawed all day and the winning margin was only 11 points.

Eastern's Harry Marks was selected as Auckland's boys team captain.

All registered 10 and 11 year olds are eligible to trial for the Trans-Tasman team and with the 2009 challenge scheduled for Homebush Stadium in Sydney, all 9 year olds should be keeping fit over the winter, ready for the October trials.

Colgate South Island Junior Champs - 11-13th January QEII Stadium, Christchurch.

Several Eastern athletes made the trek to Christchurch the weekend following the North Island games in Taranaki.

Those that went to the South Island got to compete against a large number of clubs and athletes we wouldn't otherwise come up against.

7 year old Yasmin Shakes put in the performance of the games from an Eastern point of view with a huge personal best and club record of 3.70m in the long jump, breaking a 19 year old record.

Colgate North Island Junior Champs 4-6th January TET Stadium, Inglewood, Taranaki

A big team of Eastern Athletes travelled to Inglewood in Taranaki for this year's Colgates.

Our children made several event finals - the large team allowed us to enter several relay categories - with a healthy medal return as well.

Harry Marks (11 Boys) was the stand out individual athlete with silver medals in the 100 and 200m sprints and bronze in the high jump.

A reflection of the effort and performance from our athletes was the 3 new club records set:

14 boys – Michael Bradley - Shot Put 11.12m (previous Rex-Jordan Tatoa 2007 10.43m)
12 girls – Sarah Bradley - 80m hurdles 19.0 (new event)
14 boys – Jaxon Bonnici - 400m – 55.44 (previous C. Brown 1988 57.13)
Our 14 year old medley relay team also picked up a bronze medal.

20 December 2007
Auckland Relays
As with Counties a fortnight earlier, we had a pleasing turnout for the Auckland Relay Day even taking into account that the event was held very close to Christmas this year meaning a couple of age groups were affected by family holidays etc.

The standard was very, very high with 18 clubs entering large numbers of athletes across all ages.

Eastern managed bronze medals in three field events, the 11yo Discus, 14yo Shot and 14yo Long Jump (field relays involve 2 boys and 2 girls per team).

We made finals in most of the 4x100m and 4x200m sprint categories we had teams entered in, and throughout the day we had a number of very close 4th and 5th place finishes where, but for a baton change here or there, we might have managed more medals.

In particular, our Medley Relay teams were unlucky not to medal in their respective races.

6 December 2007
Counties Relays
At the first major event of the season, Eastern had a much larger representation than in previous years and our return was 14 medals across a range of ages and events.

We did particularly well in the Boys, Girls and Mixed senior medley relays - where the legs are 1 x 800m, 1 x 400m, 2x200m and 2x100m and one athlete from each of the 10-14 age groups must compete - with 9 year old girls running (and winning medals) the final 100m in each race (yes, even the boys one) because we had no 10 year olds at the event.

Athletes are now looking forward to the final relay event of the season (Auckland Relay Champs) at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday 15th December

Regional Top Ten Competition
For the first time in several years, Eastern fielded a complete team in the Top Ten with athletes in every age group. This was reflected in our overall placing of 8th.

Several teams (pairs) also achieved "Top Ten" status in their individual age groups with the 11 Boys pairing of Scott Worrall and Jordan Vetter winning their event outright.

It was great to have Eastern athletes competing in every event - especially the 13 and 14 year olds. Well done to everyone involved, including the club management and age managers who organised the team at short notice.

Eastern was well represented and our athletes competed very well against the stronger NSW team. A complete set of Trans Tasman Challenge Day results is available on our results page Here
